Governor Peter Mbah has commended the founding fathers of Enugu State for their toils and sacrifices to actualize the prolonged quest for the creation of the state.
The commendation was made on Monday at Okpara Square, Enugu, during the occasion of the 32nd anniversary of the creation of the state by the leading association of elder statesmen in the state, the Enugu State Development Association (ESDA).
Governor Mbah, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Barr Ifeanyi Ossai. noted that the tortuous journey for the creation of Enugu State, from the Wawa Movement to the eventual realization of the state had been well-documented, saying the present generation were proud beneficiaries of torch bearers and warriors who fought gallantly to sustain the struggle to success.
The state chief executive officer stressed that the role of Enugu State in the history of the country should not be lost on the people, saying that Nigeria lived on the coal produced on the soil of Enugu, while adding that it was for long the hope of every Nigerian.
He described Enugu as a peaceful home of hospitality where people have always loved to live, work, and thrive.
He recalled that the country’s first indigenous university built on Enugu soil was intentionally named the University of Nigeria to reflect its pivotal role in the formation of the country.
He observed that the Europeans who settled in Enugu made it the capital of Eastern Region, saying this was driven by its potentials, adding that it is these potentials in everyone that make Enugu people to always conquer their challenges.
Earlier in his speech, a foremost traditional ruler in the state and President General of ESDA, Igwe Abel Nwobodo praised Governor Mbah for sustaining and upholding the dreams of the founding fathers, saying history will be kind to him for all his efforts to develop Enugu State.
While stating that ESDA had always identified with every administration in the state, he thanked the past governors for their efforts in advancing the ideals behind the creation of the state.
Two awards were conferred on Governor Mbah at the celebration, the Grand Patron of Nkanu Peoples Assembly (NPA) and the Grand Patron of Enugu State Development Association.
The colourful event was attended by the Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu, state legislators, top government functionaries, council chairmen, traditional rulers, women and youth groups, among others.
